Christmas decluttering tips: How to keep your home clutter- and stress-free this holiday season

Journal, Tips

Is the thought of cupboards stuffed with presents, pantries packed with tubs of sweets, and wrapping paper strewn everywhere enough to give you heart palpitations? It can only spell one thing: Christmas!

And if you’re hoping to have a calm, clutter-free Christmas this year, you’ve come to the right place!

We’re sharing our very best home organisation tips so this Christmas can be less chaotic and more calm.

1 – Kit out your kitchen

Your kitchen is about to become a hive of activity. It’s where family will gather to eat, drink, and be merry over the next couple of weeks, so you’ll need it to be in tip-top shape especially for all that Christmas baking!

Get rid of the expired stuff

  • First things first, make room for all the Christmas essentials like cheeses, relishes, confectionary, and all the rest by getting rid of expired products.
  • Consider carving out an hour on the lead up to December to pull everything out of the cupboard and toss whatever is past its best.
  • As for what’s left? Organise condiments, spices, and other items into Lazy Susans and transparent storage containers.
  • A pro tip? If you can, you might like to keep a shelf (or three) free for all the Christmas delights that are about to fill your cupboards.

Tidy up your utensils

  • That fork with the wonky prong? That can go. The knife that’s so blunt it couldn’t cut through butter? It’s only taking up space.
  • Look at everything you use to prepare and eat food in your home, from pots and pans to knives and forks. If it’s not fit for purpose, it’s time to let go.
  • The same is true for appliances that you never use. If they’re taking up valuable space on your countertop and they’re still in good nick, it be might be time to consider selling them on.
  • When you’re plonking that ginormous turkey and those delicious sides down on the counter you’ll be glad you did.

2 – Set up a Christmas card station

Not everyone is a Christmas card lover. And collectively, we’re sending less and less of them every year. But they can quickly accumulate and make your home look cluttered. That’s why it’s a good idea to create a Christmas card station to keep them under control. Here are a few ideas to keep Christmas cards tidy while on display…

  • Turn an old CD rack into a cardholder
  • Pin them to a noticeboard
  • Create a hole at the top of each card, loop a ribbon through it, and hang from a dedicated area in your home
  • Find a wide open space, hang a piece of twine, and clip your cards to it using mini clothing pegs

And if you’re sending Christmas cards?

  • Make sure to gather up everything you need (like pens, envelopes, cards, stamps and your address book) and give it a dedicated drawer or cupboard in your home.
  • Writing your cards will be a lot less stressful if you have everything in the one place.
  • You might like to make the process a festive affair too. Find a comfortable writing spot, stick on a festive playlist, grab your favourite Christmas drink and get writing.

3 – Create a gift-wrapping station

  • Just like those cards that can quickly get cluttered, gift-wrapping can be an overwhelming affair too.
  • First things first, gather up all your wrapping materials scissors, wrapping paper, sellotape, labels, the works!
  • Sift through it all and dump anything that is damaged or unusable. Those tiny scraps of leftover paper? It’s time to let them go!
  • Armed with all your gift-wrapping essentials, it’s time to find a designated space for them.
  • Once you’ve found a suitable spot, you’ll need to think about storage. Drawer organisers can be great for smaller items like labels and gift bags while wrapping paper can be stowed away in clear plastic bins.
  • Alternatively, you can keep them together by tying them with a piece of twine.

4 – Declutter your decorations

Christmas decorations. They aren’t easy to let go of because they can make us feel nostalgic for Christmases past. They can also take up a whole lot of valuable room. This Christmas it could be time for a cull.

  • Pull out everything you’ve got and get rid of broken ornaments. Make sure to look out for duplicates that you don’t need too.
  • If there are items that you didn’t use last year, consider letting them go or passing them along to someone else. Once you’re finished, you should be left with Christmas decorations you’re excited to put on display.

Organising your Christmas decorations

  • Now that you know what you’re left with, it’s a good idea to organise items into clear, plastic bins so you can see exactly what you need.
  • Have a separate box for baubles, another for fairy lights, and another one for Christmas ornaments.
  • A bonus point? When the leftovers have been eaten, the TV has returned to normal scheduling, and it’s time to pack all those decorations away, it will be so much easier for you to do so.
