With the brighter days and longer evenings, I always find myself itching to refresh my home this time of year. There’s something about spring that makes everything feel full of possibility – more daylight, a fresh start, and the chance to shake off the clutter (both physically and mentally!).
But before you reach for the mop and duster, I want to talk about something I’ve noticed a lot over the years – spring cleaning and spring organising are not the same thing!
🧹 Spring Cleaning vs. 📦 Spring Organising
For me, spring cleaning is about getting into every dusty corner – scrubbing, vacuuming, and deep-cleaning those areas that get ignored all winter. And don’t get me wrong, I love a good freshen-up! But if you’re cleaning around piles of clutter, it’s only going to feel like a temporary fix.
Spring organising, on the other hand, is about decluttering, creating systems, and making your home work better for you. It’s about putting everything in its place so you don’t have to keep tidying up the same mess over and over again.
I always say, if you find yourself shifting piles of stuff just to clean a surface, it’s time to declutter! So, where do you start? Here are my top five simple ways to get your home feeling lighter, fresher, and easier to manage this season.
5 Simple Ways to Spring Organise Your Home
Refresh Your Wardrobe
For me, nothing says spring refresh like a good wardrobe clear-out! Swapping heavy winter layers for lighter, brighter pieces instantly makes getting dressed feel easier.
✔ Pack away bulky coats and knitwear – the sun is out – we don’t need them!Â
✔ Keep only what fits, flatters, and makes you feel good – otherwise what’s the point!
✔ Use storage boxes and bags for seasonal clothes and put them under beds and up high in wardrobes.
✔ Organise by category (tops, jeans, dresses) so everything is easy to find – you can even do it by colour too!
When I do this myself, I always ask: ‘Did I actually wear this last season?’ If not, it might be time to pass it on!
Tidy Up High-Traffic Areas
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with families, it’s that clutter hotspots build up fast – especially in the hallway, kitchen counters, and dining table.
✔ Create drop zones for keys, post, and daily essentials
✔ Use storage baskets for quick tidy-ups around the house.
✔ Make sure everything has a home – and make it easy for the family to follow!
I do all of this in my own house, and it really helps keep the day-to-day mess under control for my husband and son.
Give Your Pantry & Fridge a Reset
A kitchen refresh isn’t just about cleaning the fridge – it’s about organising your food so you can actually see what you have!
✔ Check expiry dates and clear out anything past its best
✔ Store dry goods in clear containers and on lazy susan’s for easy visibility
✔ Group similar items together (baking supplies, snacks, pasta/rice)
✔ Keep everyday essentials within easy reach
For me, there’s nothing worse than rebuying something I already have because it was buried at the back of the cupboard! A well-organised kitchen saves time, money, and frustration.
Create Functional Storage That Works for You
I always tell my clients—good storage should make life easier, not just look nice!
✔ Stackable storage boxes work wonders in playrooms, utilities & wardrobes
✔ Labels make it easy to find (and put back) what you need
✔ Multi-purpose baskets can be used over and over again
✔ Vertical storage (hooks, shelves, hanging organisers) = more space!
If you find yourself constantly tidying the same mess, it might be time to rethink how things are stored.
Declutter as You Go
Spring organising doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Little and often is the key!
✔ Set a timer for 10 minutes a day to tackle small areas
✔ Follow the one-in, one-out rule (especially for kids’ toys & clothes!)
✔ Keep a donation bag or basket handy so decluttering becomes second nature
I do this myself—having a charity donation basket somewhere accessible makes it so much easier to let go of things bit by bit, instead of waiting for a big clear-out!
